How to Play Classic chess
Each side begins with its pieces on the back two ranks, and White moves first. Click or tap a piece, then click or tap where you want it to go. Every piece keeps its normal chess movement: rooks along ranks and files, bishops on diagonals, knights in their L-shape, the queen in any straight line, the king one square at a time, and pawns forward one square (two from their starting rank) while capturing diagonally.
The frames show a standard opening battle taking shape — central pawns pushed out, knights and bishops developed toward the middle, the black king already tucked away on the kingside. You take turns with your opponent until one king is attacked with no legal way out of the attack, which ends the game as checkmate.
If you would rather not play a whole game, the chess problem option gives you set positions to solve instead.
Tips
- Get your knights and bishops off the back rank early — the frames show both sides doing exactly this before pushing more pawns.
- Castle when you can. Black's king sitting on the kingside with a rook beside it is a much safer home than the centre.
- Watch the centre pawns. Trading or blocking there decides which pieces get open lines later.
- Use the two-player mode on one device to test an idea with a friend, then try the same opening against the computer.
