How to Play Sonic Classic Heroes

Jump, collect rings, and defeat enemies in Sonic Classic Heroes! Sonic The Hedgehog is back, and this time, he’s bringing in teammates! Play as classic characters like Tails, Knuckles, Espio, Vector, and Charmy, each with unique skill sets.

At the start of the game, your team has three lives. Characters lose a life if they fall into spikes, collide with enemies without having rings, or run out of time. You lose a life every time one of your teammates dies. The goal is to complete each level within the ten-minute time limit!

Teams

Sonic Classic Heroes lets you choose between two teams: the classic Team Sonic with Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles, or Team Chaotix (also known as the Chaotix Crew) featuring Espio, Vector, and Charmy.

Select your team in the save slots at the beginning of the game. Choose a team by pressing the “C” button and then left or right to switch teams. Note that you can’t swap teams once you’ve started the game.

Player Count

You can include up  to three characters in a team, with the option to remove one if desired. This feature allows you to play the game with friends, with each player controlling their own character!

Game Mode

Sonic Classic Heroes combines the game campaigns of both Sonic The Hedgehog 1 and 2. You have the option to play either campaign or both. You can also change the co-op mode to either Classic Co-op or Chaotix Style and activate AI on special stages.

Worlds

In Sonic Classic Heroes, you can skip directly to any world and level immediately without going through all 40+ levels. Explore all 18 worlds, including Metropolis, Casino Night, and Oil Ocean. You can even play the special stages anytime and change the number of emeralds available!

Adjust the Controls

The default controls are quite hard to navigate, especially if you’re not a retro game player. Thankfully, you can change the controls by hovering on the bottom left of the screen. Click on “Controls Settings”, then press the keyboard controls. Press in the keyboard the control you would like to swap the default with, and then press “Update” when done.

Collect Rings

Think of collecting rings like an extra shield for your team! If they hold at least one ring, the team won’t lose a life when they collide with an enemy or a hazardous obstacle, although all your rings will scatter.

Use The Spin Dash

Characters can use a spin dash to charge their speed from a stationary position and launch forward. This is a helpful skill especially when stumbling upon high or looped platforms. Use this attack to destroy enemies, obstacles, and robots as well in order to save trapped animals.

Act Quickly

Remember that you only have 10 minutes per act before you lose a life! Keep an eye on the timer below your ring count. Look out for star posts as well that act as checkpoints in the game. This is where you’ll respawn if you lose a life.

How do I perform a spin dash?

Press the arrow keys to look up or down, and simultaneously press the “A” or “B” button. This move allows your character to charge their speed in a fixed position. Release the arrow key to launch them forward.

How do I swap teams or change game modes?

At the start of the game, when you press “Start”, your screen will show you the different save slots available. You can see here the details for the game in that certain save slot, including customizable teams and game modes. A button directory is there to guide you in customizing your save slot.

How do I play with other players?

Sonic Classic Heroes supports up to three players. Hover on the bottom left of the screen and then click “Controls Settings”. You can connect to a gamepad, or assign separate keystrokes for each player. Don’t forget to set the number of players in the save slot customization.

Can I save my game?
