How to Play Lode Retro Adventure

You move the miner left and right along brick floors and climb the ladders that connect each layer of the stage. The HUD tracks your score, the level number, your hi-score and a coin counter — in the frames it starts at 0/11, so you need every coin on the map before the level is done. Coins sit on open platforms and in tight pockets between walls, so plan a route rather than backtracking.

The shovel is your other tool. Digging breaks a ground tile and opens a hole, which is how you trap the purple monsters patrolling the tunnels. Trapped monsters can get out again and come after you, so keep moving once a hole has done its job. Golden bananas appear as extra treasure and add to your score on top of the coins. Clear the coin quota and the level advances, with your best total kept as the hi-score.

Tips

  1. Check the coin counter at the top left before you start digging so you know how many pickups the level is hiding.
  2. Dig a hole in a monster's path rather than beside it — the trap only helps if the monster walks into it.
  3. Don't linger near a filled hole; the copy warns that monsters can climb back out and chase you.
  4. Grab golden bananas when they're on your route, since they add score on top of the coins you already need.
  5. Use ladders to change floors quickly when a monster is closing in on your platform.
