Ships 3D is an online web browser game where players engage in naval warfare, featuring classic wooden frigates in an open sea of chaos and battle. Get your crew together to play in various game modes of fast-paced ocean battle.

How to Play Ships 3D

Earning Gold and XP

Hit the open sea and start battling it out with the other frigates competing for the same objective. Sinking enemy ships, killing other players, and achieving your objective will all net you XP. Depending on the game mode you're playing, the objectives on the map are by far the most efficient way to rack up large amounts of points. You'll use your earned levels and gold later on to upgrade your ship to become more powerful.

Game Modes

Team Flags

Two teams (Red vs Blue) fight to control 3 different islands on the map. Both teams will spawn on their own starting island and set sail to battle it out for control of each island. The Team Flags game mode is a perfect mixture of land and sea PvP. Earn points by sinking other ships, killing enemy players, and capturing the flags on each island. Coordinate your attacks with your fellow teammates to overrun the objective islands and capture them swiftly!

Trader Game

In the Trader Game, each crew fends for themselves. The objective of the Trader Game is to sail around with your crew (or solo) to find different resources, and return them back to the Trader to receive points. The different resources you can find are Gold, Beans, and Tea. Each resource is worth a different number of points, Gold being worth the most. Sail your ship directly over loot floating in the water and it will be picked up by your ship. Otherwise, you can jump off to collect it yourself. There is only one Trader to return your resources back to, so be careful of players camping this area to steal your loot!

Commanding Your Ship

There are a number of controls you'll need to learn to command your ship effectively.

Lowering and raising your sails

Raise and lower your sails by using the cog located as the base of the ship's mast. Raising your sails can be strategic to slow your ship down or even come to a complete stop while you collect your loot from the waters of a sunken ship, or just need to hold your position to pummel your enemy with cannonballs!

Turning your sails with the wind

Turn your sails by using the cog located on the mast of your ship. Pay attention to the flags at the front and back of your ship. The flags will point in the direction that the wind is currently blowing. Keeping your sails turn into the direction of the wind will increase your speed so that you can catch up or out maneuver your enemies!

Steering your ship

Steer your ship by using the wheel towards the back of your ship. This one is pretty self explanatory!

Managing Your Crew

Access the "Join other ships" from the main menu to join someone else's crew, or allow other players to join your crew. You'll also find a link that you can directly send your friends so they can easily join your party.

Utilizing the Helper Bot

To help out solo players, you have the option to have a Helper bot on your crew. This Helper bot can help with various functions on your ship so that you don't get overwhelmed with how much there is to command an entire ship yourself! The Helper bot can be extremely useful as a solo player but doesn't always align its actions with your own personal objectives, so be sure to customize what tasks the Helper bot should work on:

  • Steer the ship - will automatically steer the ship towards objectives
  • Set the sails - will automatically raise or lower sails based on the objective
  • Fire cannons - will automatically fire cannons at nearby enemies

Weapons & Health

In addition to the obvious cannons that your ship will be equipped with, the player starts with two basic weapons: a sword (melee) and a rifle (long range).

Sword (Melee)

Pull out your melee weapon by pressing "1" when you're in close combat with your enemies. It takes about 5 melee hits to kill an enemy, but the attack speed is much quicker than the rifle.

Rifle Gun (Long range)

Pull out your rifle by pressing "2" when you're further away from your enemies. The reload time is somewhere around 5 seconds, so be sure to bob and weave while you wait for your reload animation to finish! It takes three shots to kill your enemy and there is no head-shot multiplier.

Ship Cannons

Ship cannons are your most powerful weapon and are crucial to sinking enemy battle-ships. While it still takes 3 direct hits to kill a player with a cannon, it's the only weapon that can effectively sink enemy ships. Once you level up and earn enough gold from playing, there are a number of upgrades that you can purchase to make your ship cannons much more lethal.

Upgrades & Customization

After playing the game to earn some points, you'll earn levels and gold that you can leverage to upgrade your ship. Access this from the main menu by clicking on "Upgrades".

Cannon Ball Upgrades

  • Light ball - Does less damage than your standard cannonball, but has a quicker reload time.
  • Heavy ball - Does more damage than your standard cannonball, but has a slower reload time.
  • Grape shot - Shoots multiple projectiles out of the cannon like a shotgun. Has the potential to do more damage than your standard cannonball if all projectiles hit.
  • Sniper shot - Similar damage to the standard cannonball, but shoots further.
  • Fire ball - The most destructive cannonball of them all. Deals significantly more damage to ships and players but is the most costly.

Ship Upgrades

  • Sloop - The default ship that every player starts out with at level 1, and is great for solo players.
  • Frigate - Unlocked at level 9 and is best suited for crews with 1-2 players.
  • Warship - Unlocked at level 30 and is best suited for crews with 3-4 players. This warship features multiple sails and ship decks equipped with cannons, requiring more players to properly sail.

Player Skins

There are dozens of player skins that you can unlock by leveling up in the game, or by paying money to support the developer, ASDF. The vast majority of the skins are unlocked by achieving a higher level in the game, but there are a couple skins that range from $2-3.

Multiplayer

  • Friends - The game features an in-game friends feature that allows you to add other players to play with in the future.
  • Clans - Start or join a clan to compete against other clans for a leader-board position, and maybe even make it on to the Wall of Fame!

Game UI and Playing Environment

  • Chat - Press "Enter" to chat globally with all of the players in your lobby. Press "T" to chat with just your crew mates.
  • Mini-map - The mini-map can be found in the bottom right of your screen and can be very helpful in navigating to certain objective areas or identifying enemy ships surrounding you.
  • Scores - Keep track of your and everyone else's score in the top right of your screen.
  • Menu - Hit "ESC" to access the general menu where you can control your settings, upgrades, friends list, clan, and more.
  • Optional settings - In the configuration menu ("ESC") you'll find some important settings that can make playing the game more comfortable for you. You can change your mouse sensitivity, or turn on crosshairs to make aiming your cannons a breeze.

Graphics

Immerse yourself in this 3D world from a first-person perspective in this online io web-browser game. Enjoy the simplistic graphics, free from cluttered UI elements, so you can focus on your naval warfare and PvP battles. The color patterns are also simple with no more than three types of color schemes used in the game: blue sea, light brown wooden ships, and black cannon guns.

Tips & Tricks to winning Ships 3D battles

  • When engaging in a battle against another ship, aim your cannons for the enemy gunners controlling their cannons. This can stop the enemy onslaught and save your ship from taking excessive damage.
  • Your rifle makes an excellent opener against other players on the ground. Hit your opponent with a rifle shot, and then quickly move in with your sword to finish them off while they are reloading.
  • In close-quarter combat using your sword, move through your enemy to make it more difficult for them to hit you.
  • While playing the Trader Game, consider camping out on the only island where players can turn in their loot for points. You'll have lots of opportunities to steal their resources and turn it in for your own gain!
